Beautiful Scotland's Neighbourhood Awards

Callander's flower beds in bloom

The great Callander Spring Clean in April 2008 saw volunteers from the Trust, aided by members of Rotary, Round Table, Film Society, Stirling Council Streetscape, Rangers from the National Park and the Community Policeman, delve into every nook and cranny in town and the outskirts to remove enough litter and dumped rubbish to fill a convoy of lorries. The Trust then entered the Neighbourhood Awards Scheme organised by Beautiful Scotland.

This involved a written description of the clean-up and its follow-up anti-litter campaign, the planting of public flower beds and distribution of hanging baskets by the Trust. Our submission was sufficient to merit a visit by two assessors to see for themselves. Fortunately they chose one of the few completely dry, warm and sunny afternoons of Summer 2008 and were duly impressed with the tidiness, the well tended private gardens, colourful floral displays, and the primary school eco-garden.

Callander gained 74 marks out of a possible 100 from the assessors, and was presented with a Certificate of Merit.
