The Greening of Callander

Young volunteer gardeners from Callander Youth Project with one of the planters at the West End boundary; and a newly planted bed in the Main Street.

Let's cheer up the town and banish all those gloomy forecasts! Every year more and more individuals and businesses are doing their bit to brighten up the Main Street with window boxes and hanging baskets. However, there's plenty of scope for more people to get involved.

This year we have placed recycled plastic planters at the east and west entrances to the town to contain year round interest and colourful summer bedding displays. Members of Callander Youth Project helped with many hands making light work of putting the first greenery in them. The concrete bases, the grit and compost were donated by local tradespeople.

We will also provide large hanging baskets for Ancaster Square, and offer a hanging basket service to any businesses who would like one at £10 per basket. They must promise to water and feed their basket/s regularly because even in Callander we cannot depend on rainfall to keep them looking good.

The flower beds at the west end of Main Street will not be forgotten. They will be weeded and planted again, and once more we hope that the nearby shopkeepers will help with their maintenance.

Donations are most welcome - money, plants (geraniums, begonias, trailing lobelia and busy lizzies) or labour. Nothing will be wasted or unacknowledged and Callander will be a colourful and attractive sight for all to enjoy.
