Callander Community Hydro Ltd

A project devised to make positive use of one of Callander’s natural resources - rain.

This water is used to generate energy, which is sold to an electricity supplier for use within the National Grid.

The available income from the scheme is allocated every three months to support activities within the community. This money is available to support projects to benefit Callander through the Community Hydro Fund.

The Hydro Scheme is situated in Stank Glen on Forestry Commission land.

Water is diverted from Stank Burn into an intake, flowed down a buried pipeline into a turbine house, used to generate electricity… and then returned to the stream lower down.

There are no dams or reservoirs, so the pipe is hidden when the land is replanted.

The catchment area for the water if 4.23 square kilometres.
